This A.M.I. is part of the national carbon storage strategy drawn up by the DGE (Direction Générale des Entreprises) and the DGEC under the impetus of the Minister Delegate for Industry and Energy. Despite decarbonization efforts, some industrial emissions remain unavoidable. The 50 highest-emitting industrial sites in France require the storage of 4 to 8 MtCO2 per year. CCUS technologies offer an innovative solution for these residual emissions.
At the same time, an EVASTOCO2 study led by BRGM and conducted by the “storage” working group of the “New Energy Systems” strategic sector committee (CSF NSE), with AVENIA as coordinator for the onshore zone in the South-West, is taking stock of existing geological data. The study will be published in June 2024.
Based on the results of the A.M.I. and the EVASTOCO2 study, a call for projects will be launched to support and accompany actions such as seismic campaigns and injectivity tests, aimed at improving knowledge of the subsoil and encouraging the search for CO2 storage capacities in France.
In France, the potential of existing hydrocarbon concessions is estimated at around 800 million tonnes of CO2, covering 50 years of French industry’s long-term CO2 storage needs.
